My working wife had no more vacation left, but I still had some time off.

It was boring to be home alone, so one day I decided to surprise my wife by doing dishes, dusting and straightening up the house. I was sure I would get all sorts of praise from her when she came home, but she didn't say a word. Finally, I could stand it no longer.

"You didn't even notice how nicely I straightened up today,"I complained. Her reply opened my eyes. "Yeah,"she said. "It's a thankless job, isn't it?"

직장을 다니는 아내는 휴가가 끝났지만 난 아직 휴가 중이다.

혼자 집에 있자니 따분해져 설거지를 하고 먼지를 털며 집안을 깨끗이 정돈해 아내를 깜짝 놀라게 해줘야겠다고 마음먹었다. 난 아내가 돌아와 칭찬해줄 것으로 믿었지만 아내는 아무런 언급도 하지 않았다. 참다못해 난 불평을 했다.

"오늘 집안을 말끔히 치웠는데 당신은 본 척도 하질 않는군."

하지만 아내의 대답을 듣고는 눈이 번쩍 뜨였다. "그래요, 아무리 해봤자 알아주지 않는 일이란 것을 이제는 알겠죠?"
