Thomas Edison, the great American inventor, had a summer home in the country. He displayed his inventions in the house for the visitors. To enter the house each visitor had to pass through a turnstile which required a good bit of strength to push. "Mr. Edison, why do you have this thing here? It seems like nothing but a nuisance," a visitor asked. "Everyone who pushes his way through that turnstile," Edison said, "pumps seven gallons of water into my water tank." He is not called a great inventor for nothing. 미국의 위대한 발명가 토머스 에디슨은 시골에 여름용 별장을 갖고 있었다. 그는 자신의 별장에 방문객들을 위해 발명품을 전시해놓았다. 모든 방문객들은 힘이 꽤 드는 육중한 회전식 문을 밀고 별장에 들어가야 했다. "에디슨 씨, 이건 왜 여기에 설치했습니까? 그냥 귀찮기만 한데요", 한 방문객이 물었다. 그러자 에디슨이 답하길, "이 회전문을 밀고 들어오는 모든 사람들은 물탱크에 7갤런의 물을 부어주게 되지요." 그가 괜히 위대한 발명가로 불리는 게 아니다.
