During my brother’s wedding, my mother had managed to keep from crying, until she glanced at my grandparents. My grandmother had reached over to my grandfather’s wheelchair and gently touched his hand. That was all it took to start my mother’s tears flowing. After the wedding, Mom went over to my grandmother and told her how that tender gesture triggered her outburst. “Well, I’m sorry to ruin your moment,” Grandmother replied. “But I was just checking to see if he was awake.” 남동생 결혼식에서 어머니는 울지 않으려고 단단히 다짐을 했다. 하지만 할머니가 휠체어에 탄 할아버지에게 손을 뻗어 지긋이 할아버지의 손을 잡는 걸 본 어머니는 울음을 참지 못하고 흐느끼셨다. 결혼식 후 어머니는 할머니에게 다가가 방금 전 감동 때문에 눈물을 터뜨렸다고 말했다. 그러자 할머니 왈, “실망시켜 미안하다만 난 그냥 네 아버지가 졸지 않는지 확인한 것 뿐이야.”
