I was driving too fast in rush to work and was pulled over by the highway patrol. The state trooper noticed that my shirt had the name of a local high school on it. “I teach math there,” I said. The trooper smiled and said, “Well, a teacher’s sped over the limit. At 12 dollars for every mile, 40 bucks for court and rise in insurance, what’s her total cost?” “Subtracting the low salary I receive, multiplying by the number of kids who hate math, then adding to that the fact that none of us would be anywhere without teachers, I’d say zero.” He handed me back my license. “Math was never my favorite subject,” he admitted. “Please slow down.” 늦게 출근길에 나선 난 그만 속도위반에 걸렸다. 경찰은 내 티셔츠에 학교이름이 새겨져 있는 것을 봤다. 나는 “이 학교에서 수학을 가르치고 있습니다”라고 말했다. 경찰은 웃으며 “그러세요, 이거 선생님이 속도위반을 했으니 1마일당 12달러에, 벌금 40달러, 보험금도 오르겠네요. 그럼 얼마나 내셔야 할까요?”라고 물었다. “내가 받는 저임금을 빼고, 반에서 수학을 싫어하는 아이들의 수를 곱한 다음, 세상 어느 곳도 선생님이 없으면 안된다는 사실을 더하면, 안 내도 될 것 같은데.” 그러자 경찰은 면허증을 돌려주며 “제가 가장 싫어했던 과목이 수학이죠. 다음부터는 과속하지 마세요.”
