Last month a world-wide survey was conducted by the UN. The only question asked was: "Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?" The survey was a huge failure because of the following: In Western Europe they didn't know what "shortage" meant. In Africa they didn't know what "food" meant. In China they didn't know what "opinion" meant. In the Middle East they didn't know what "solution" meant. In the US they didn't know what "the rest of the world" meant. 지난달 유엔이 전세계를 대상으로 여론조사를 시행했다. 질문은 딱 하나, "지금 다른 나라에서 벌어지고 있는 식량 부족에 대한 해결책이 있다면 솔직한 의견을 부탁 드립니다"였다. 하지만 여론조사는 다음과 같은 이유 때문에 무산됐다. 서유럽에서는 '부족'이라는 단어의 뜻을 몰랐고 아프리카인들은 '식량'이 뭔지 몰랐다. 중국에서는 '의견'이 무엇인지, 중동에서는 '해결책'이 무슨 뜻인지를 몰랐다. 미국인들은 '다른 나라'라는 게 뭔지 알지 못했다.
