A defendant in lawsuit involving large sums of money was saying to his lawyer, "Would it help if I sent the judge a box of cigars?" "Oh no!" said the lawyer.
"This judge is a stickler for ethical behavior. You shouldn't even smile at him." Finally the judge rendered a decision in favor of the defendant. Leaving the court, he said to his lawyer, "Thanks for the tip about the cigars. It worked." "I'm sure we would have lost the case if you'd sent them," said the lawyer. "But I did sent them," said the defendant.
"What?? You did?" "Yes. That's how we won the case. I sent the cheapest cigars to the judge, but enclosed the plaintiff's business card…"
큰돈이 걸린 소송의 피고가 "판사에게 시거 한 박스를 보내며 잘 봐주지 않을 까요?"하고 물었다. "천만에요. 이 판사는 윤리문제에 여간 까다로운 사람이 아닙니다.
이 사람을 보고는 웃지도 마십시오"라고 변호사는 대답했다. 마침내 피고에게 유리한 판결이 났다. 법정을 나서면서 피고는 변호사에게 "시거 이야기 귀띔해줘서 고마워요. 그 말대로네요." "그걸 보냈다면 우리는 틀림없이 패했을 겁니다"라고 변호사는 말했다.
"하지만 보냈는데요"라고 피고는 말했다. "뭐라구요?? 보냈다고요?" "그래요. 그래서 이긴 거라고요.제일 싸구려 시거를 보내면서 상대편 원고의 명함을 거기 동봉했죠. 뭐…"
