The Chief Rabbi and the Pope meet in Rome. The Rabbi notices a fancy phone on a table. “It’s my direct line to the Lord,” the Pope says, insisting that the Rabbi try it out. The man from Israel holds a lengthy discussion with the Lord. After hanging up the Rabbi insists on paying for his phone charges. The pontiff checks the counter on the phone and says, “40 euros(56 dollars).”
A few months later, the Pope is in Jerusalem. On the Chief Rabbi’s desk he sees a phone identical to his and learns it also is a direct line to the Lord. The Rabbi urges the Pope to talk to the Lord. After hanging up, the Pope insists on paying for the charges. The Rabbi looks on the counter and says : “1.5 shekels(0.42 dollar).” “Why so cheap!?” the Pope is surprised. “It’s a local call,” says the Rabbi.

몇달 후 교황이 예루살렘에 갈 일이 있었다. 랍비의 책상 위에는 교황청 것과 똑같은 전화기가 놓여 있었는데 그것 역시 주님과의 직통전화였다. 랍비는 교황더러 그것을 사용해보라고 졸랐다. 통화가 끝나자 교황도 요금을 내겠다고 했다. 랍비는 통화시간을 보더니 “1.5세켈(0.42달러)”이라고 대답했다. “어째서 그렇게 싸죠!?”라며 교황은 놀라웠다. 랍비가 말하길 “시내통화잖아요.”
