Late one night, a few days after issuing instructions on proper telephone etiquette, a young navy officer dialed the map room.
He was greeted with a sleepy voice, “Yeah? What is it?” Testily, the young officer launched into a lecture on the proper military way to answer a phone, and then said, “Now let’s start again. Pretend your phone just rang.”
“Very well, sir” replied the voice. “Captain’s cabin, Captain speaking, sir.”
올바른 전화 에티켓에 대한 지시가 나가고 며칠이 지난 어느 늦은 밤, 젊은 해군 장교가 해도실과 통화하려고 전화 다이얼을 돌렸다.
전화를 받은 사람은 졸린 목소리로 “음, 무슨 일이야?”라고 했다.
젊은 장교는 짜증을 내며 올바른 군대 전화예절에 대한 일장훈시를 하고는 “자, 지금 막 전화벨이 울렸다고 생각하고 이제 다시 시작해 보라구!”라고 지시했다.
이에 상대방은 “알겠습니다”라고 대답하고는 다음과 같이 말했다. “여긴 함장실, 저는 함장입니다.”
