The cabinet of a certain country met to consider there nation’s grave financial difficulties. After much futile talk, one of the ministers suggested they declare war on the US. “Of course we would be quickly defeated, but then America would shower money and supplies upon us, and we would then be over our difficulties.” “But, said the prime minister, “suppose by some chance we won the war. Then we would be in a terrible crisis.” 어떤 나라 장관들이 심각한 재정난 타개를 논의하기 위해 회동했다. 이렇다 할 성과 없이 한참 이야기가 진행된 후 장관 한 사람이 미국에 대해 선전포고를 하자고 제의했다. “물론 우리쪽이 대번에 패할 테죠. 하지만 그렇게 되면 미국이 돈과 물자를 갖다 쏟아놓을 것이고 그렇게 해서 우리는 이 난국에서 헤어나게 될 게 아닙니까.” 그러자 총리가 한마디했다. “하지만 만의 하나 우리가 이기는 날에는 어떻게 됩니까? 그때엔 끔찍한 사태를 맞게 될 게 아닙니까!”
