The fire chief watched firemen extinguish a blaze in a boarding house, and carry to safety the intoxicated gent in whose room the fire had originated."Confound it!" roared the chief, "Haven't you got sense enough not to smoke in bed when you're in this condition?" The drunk protested mournfully, "Honest, Chief, It was burning already when I got into it!"
하숙집 화재현장으로 달려간 소방서장은 소방관들이 진화작업을 하면서 불이 처음 났던 방으로부터 만취가 된 남자를 구조해내는 것을 지켜보았다. "빌어먹을! 그 지경으로 취해 가지고 침대에서 담배를 피우니 불이 안 날 리가 있나?" 소방서장은 고함을 질렀다.
그러자 주정뱅이는 애처롭게 항변했다. "정말입니다, 서장님. 제가 누웠을 때 이미 침대는 타고 있었다구요!"
