A French tourist went to Beijing and asked two locals in French, "I'd like to go to Tiananmen Square. How do I get there?" Two Chinese don't know French. He asked the same question in German but they don't know German either. He tried the 3rd time in English. They understood what he said, but can't explain the way to Tiananmen in English. Disappointed, the French man left. One of the locals said, "I think we should learn a foreign language." The other replied, "You're right. But you need to use it in place. He spoke three different languages which was out of place." 베이징을 찾은 한 프랑스 관광객이 두 중국인에게 프랑스어로 "톈안먼 광장에 가고 싶은데 어떻게 가야 되나요? "라고 물었다. 중국인들은 프랑스어를 몰랐다. 관광객은 같은 질문을 독일어로 했지만 그들은 독일어도 몰랐다. 3번째로 영어로 질문을 하자 중국인들은 그의 말을 알아들었지만 톈안먼으로 가는 길을 영어로 설명할 수는 없었다. 실망한 관광객은 그 자리를 떴다. 중국인 중 한 명이 "우리도 외국어 한가지는 배워야겠어"라고 말했다. 그러자 또 한 명이 말했다. "그래. 그렇지만 외국어도 장소에 맞게 써야지, 저 남자는 3개국 말을 하는데 적재적소에서 쓰지를 못하잖아"라고 했다.
