A college physics professor was explaining a particularly complicated concept to his class when a pre-med student interrupted him. "Why do we have to learn this stuff?" The young man blurted out. "To save lives." the professor responded before continuing the lecture. A few minutes later the student spoke up again. "So how does physics save lives?" The professor stared at the student for a long time. "Physics saves lives." he said, "because it keeps the idiots out of medical school." 한 대학교 물리학 교수가 학생들에게 매우 복잡한 개념에 대해 설명하고 있는데 한 의예과 학생이 그의 말을 가로 막으며. " 왜 이런 것들을 배워야 하죠?" 라는 말을 불쑥 내뱉었다. "생명을 구하기 위해서지"라고 교수가 강의를 재개하기 전 답했다. 몇 분 후 그 학생이 다시 물었다. "어떻게 물리학이 생명을 구한다는 거죠?" 교수가 그 학생을 잠시 동안 응시하더니 말했다. "물리학은 생명을 구한다네. 왜냐하면 의대에서 (너 같은) 얼간이들을 퇴출시키기 때문이지."
